It was at the end of October 2000 when we (Pyli, Rapo, Pasi, Afro) went to Porkkala to having a nice Saturday and, of course, get some whitefish etc. The beginning was not promising: just Pasi and I (Afro) saw some fish but we did not succeed to catch anything. We spent there appr. two hours and then we decided to make a move the rushes in order to find some pikes.
We found a good spot where Rapo had got some big pikes a year before and we decided to split that everyone could have good oppurtunities to capture massive "puikulas". Thus Pasi and Rapo continued a bit further while they dropped Pyli and me appr. 200 meters from each other.
Now my only aim was to shoot at least one huge pike, when I was dissapointed because of missing the whitefish few moments before, I had not got anything yet! So I started to swim to the centre of the rushes first checking the places. After just a few moments I saw a fish but I did not considered carefully, I just shooted towards it immediatly! Not until I saw the hit I realised that it was an extremely massive puikula! And so I hold my harpoon by both hands strongly and "Lasse" was dancing like a crocodile few moments. Then I sidled it unkowingly what should I do next! I just took "Lasse" instinctively on my lap like parents do for their babies. Lasse was very kind indeed, he did not move at all anymore. I started to walk ashore, a massive pike on my arms. Rapo and Pasi noticed us and started to roar loudly. When Pasi saw Lasse (Rapo named him) close he said that it is at least 12 kg. Ok, it was only 9,25 kg but because of the huge length 115 cm Lasse had probably been a lot heavier before. Lasse is, nevertheless, the hughest fish among Team Kampela ever!
Where is Lasse nowadays? We actually ate Lasse few weeks ago (Feb 2001) in a happening called "Lasse-peijaiset". Many suspected that Lasse´s meat was uneatable but I succeeded, however, to get many people to our place promising them good catering of vodka. But no problem, we got very good oriental fishballs (ask JK, he ate at least 15 of them!). Lasse´s head is still in our freezer in anticipation of drying and also painting; it will finally be the rack of my mobile phone on the wall.
